The Harlem Renaissance
With racism spreading across America and job opportunities rare, the arts were one of the few ways the black community could express itself. An artistic and cultural boom known as the Harlem Renaissance occured in the decades following World War I. Although there are no exact beginning or ending dates, it is generally thought to have taken place from 1920 to 1940. Some of the main divisions of the Renaissance were literature, art, and jazz music.
The Harlem Renaissance began slowing down when the Great Depression hit. Harlemites were forced out of their homes, but they continued to cultivate their culture. Along with the Great Depression, the onset of World War II and the rise of rock 'n roll ended the Harlem Renaissance by 1940.
